A dynamical characterization of the small world phase
Small-world (SW) networks have been identified in many different fields.
Topological coefficients like the clustering coefficient and the characteristic
path length have been used in the past for a qualitative characterization of
these networks. Here a dynamical approach is used to characterize the
small-world phenomenon. Using the model, a coupled map dynamical
system is defined on the network. Entrance to and exit from the SW phase are
related to the behavior of the ergodic invariants of the dynamics.Comment: 8 pages Latex, 3 figure
Catalysing governance in a paradoxical city: the Lisbon Strategic Charter and the uncertainties of political empowerment in the Portuguese capital city

Lessons for urban politics evolution from two recent participatory processes in Portugal
UIDB/04647/2020 UIDP/04647/2020This article presents a preliminary analysis on the evolutionary framework for new types of in-tersections, dialogues and conflicts between urban administration and civic movements in Por-tugal. The analysis is here based on two case studies developed around urban requalification processes in two central public spaces, in the cities of Lisbon – the Martim Moniz Square – and Aveiro – the Rossio Garden. In these cases, the conflicts and the interconnections between local authorities and social movements have been evolving in very interesting forms. Expressing not only relevant changes occurring on urban civic movements themselves, but also an inevitable although still quite limited and visibly thwarted political culture reconfiguration on urban gov-ernments and its administration.publishersversionpublishe
Access to the housing market in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and the COVID-19 pandemic impact
UIDB/04647/2020 UIDP/04647/2020This study aims to analyze the access to housing in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, particularly looking to the evolution of the average effort rate to households in two different moments: i) the trends until the end of 2019; ii) the first impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the housing market, over 2020.The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Portuguese housing market. In particular, we aim to: i) quantitatively evaluate how the pandemic has shaped access to housing in the mortgage and rental markets; ii) identify the new challenges that the housing market is facing. The quantitative analysis is based on the calculation of the average effort rate, for the mortgages and the rental market. The calculation of the average effort rate makes use of a model created by the authors, using statistic/real estate data from Statistics Portugal (Instituto Nacional de EstatÃstica). The results already prepared show that the average effort rate growth explosively in the second half of the 2010s decade, making access to housing more difficult. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic shifted the dynamics of the Portuguese housing market, due to the urban tourism drop, international real estate funds decreased investments, and the global economic decline. Thus, it is interesting to understand what was the first reaction of the Portuguese real estate market in a pandemic situation and how it can affect access to housing in the near future.publishersversionpublishe
Quarkonium production at the LHC: a phenomenological analysis of surprisingly simple data patterns
The LHC quarkonium production measurements reveal a startling observation:
the J/, (2S), and (nS) -differential cross sections are compatible with one universal momentum
scaling pattern. Considering also the absence of strong polarizations of
directly and indirectly produced S-wave mesons, we are led to the conclusion
that there is currently no evidence of a dependence of the partonic production
mechanisms on the quantum numbers and mass of the final state. The experimental
observations supporting this universal production scenario are remarkably
significant, as shown by a new analysis approach, unbiased by specific
theoretical calculations of partonic cross sections, which are only considered
a posteriori, in comparisons with the data-driven results.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Development of CO-releasing molecular for the treatment of inflammatory diseases
Dissertation presented to obtain a Ph.D. degree (Doutoramento) in Chemistry
at the Instituto de Tecnologia Quimica e Biol6gica da Universidade Nova de LisboaCarbon Monoxide, CO, has been recognized as an endogenously produced, potent
biological mediator involved in many defense mechanisms both in physiologic
and pathologic situations. As a result of these signaling processes, CO possesses a
strong therapeutic potential on a wide range of disease indications. However, the
hardly avoidable safety and practical problems associated with therapeutic
inhalation of toxic CO gas, led to the search for molecules capable of delivering
CO to tissues in a living organism in a controlled and therapeutically useful
manner. From all the areas of the chemical space where such CO-Releasing
Molecules (CO-RMs) can be found, Metal Carbonyls Complexes (MCCs) seems
to be the most versatile.
It is the purpose of this Thesis to provide an extensive characterization of the
behavior of MCCs in the presence of biological molecules and media, in order to
identify the chemical and structural parameters that are more relevant to define
the profile of a therapeutically effective metal-based CO-RM drug.(...)This Thesis was financially supported by Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia,
